• Why Does the Modern World Seem to Be Drifting Away from Marriage?

«“Marriage is not ending. Perhaps our perspective on marriage is changing.”»

Read the Previous Part: Part – 6

When we look at the modern world, one change is becoming increasingly visible.

People are marrying later than they did in the past. Some are postponing marriage, some prefer to remain in long-term relationships without marrying, while others are consciously choosing not to marry at all.

But reducing all of this to a simple statement like—

«“Today’s generation simply doesn’t want to get married.”»

—would be far too easy a conclusion.

The real story is much more complex.

    —

    🔄

Marriage Was Once a Necessity; Today, It Is Becoming a Choice

In many traditional societies, marriage was not simply a personal decision based on love or companionship.

It was a way of building families, providing economic security, maintaining social identity, and fulfilling an expected stage of life. Remaining unmarried beyond a certain age was often considered unusual.

But modern society has changed many of those circumstances.

    –

    🎓

Education has become more accessible and increasingly important.
    –

    👩‍💼

Women’s participation in the workforce and their financial independence have grown across many societies.
    –

    🏠

Many people can now manage their homes and finances independently.
    –

    🌍

Education and career opportunities often take people far beyond their hometowns, cities, or even countries.
    –

    🧭

And perhaps most importantly, people today have more choices and greater autonomy over how they want to shape their lives.

As a result, marriage is gradually moving from being an “expected milestone of life” toward becoming a “personal choice.”

But becoming a choice does not mean losing its value.

    —

    ⏳

Why Is the Age of Marriage Increasing?

Several practical factors can contribute to people marrying later.

    1️⃣

    The Growing Importance of Education

    🎓

Many young adults want to complete their education before taking on the responsibilities of marriage.

University degrees, master’s programs, PhDs, and professional training can take several years. As the period of education and preparation becomes longer, marriage may naturally be postponed.

    2️⃣

    Career Growth and Personal Ambitions

    🎯

For many young people, life is no longer defined simply by finding a job.

They may want to build a career, start a business, move abroad, travel, or develop new skills.

In such circumstances, postponing marriage for a few years may simply be a practical life decision.

    3️⃣

    The Desire for Financial Stability

    💰

Many people prefer to achieve a certain level of financial stability before getting married.

Their thinking may be as simple as—

«“Let me establish my career first, secure my finances, and build some savings.”»

This does not necessarily mean that they value money more than love.

Sometimes, it simply means they want to feel prepared for the responsibilities that may come with building a family.

    4️⃣

The Search for the Right Partner

    ❤️

Perhaps this is one of the most personal reasons of all.

People today are not only asking—

    «“When should I get married?”»

    They are also asking—

    «“Who should I marry?”»

That seemingly simple question changes the way people think about marriage.

If someone feels they have not yet found a partner whose values, goals, expectations, and way of seeing life are reasonably compatible with theirs, they may prefer to wait.

    —

    📱

    Has Technology Changed Relationships?

Yes—but not in only one direction.

Dating apps and social media have dramatically expanded the ways in which people can meet and connect with others.

In the past, finding a potential partner was often limited to family, relatives, friends, or local social circles. Today, people can connect with others far beyond their immediate communities.

But greater choice can also create new challenges.

Sometimes, having too many options can make decisions harder rather than easier.

    People may find themselves thinking—

«“Maybe someone better is just one swipe away… perhaps the next person will be more compatible.”»

This constant comparison can sometimes make commitment more difficult.

But saying that technology has “destroyed marriage” would be an oversimplification.

Many people also use digital platforms to form meaningful relationships that eventually lead to marriage.

«“Technology has changed how people meet; it has not eliminated the human need for love, connection, and companionship.”»

    —

    👩‍💼

    The Changing Role of Women

To understand the changing nature of marriage, we also need to understand the changing social and economic role of women.

In many traditional societies, women’s economic security was closely connected to their families or spouses.

Today, many women are pursuing higher education, building careers, running businesses, and making their own financial decisions.

As a result, marriage is no longer an economic necessity for every woman in the way it may once have been in some societies.

But this does not mean that women are rejecting marriage.

Instead, expectations from marriage are changing.

The question is no longer only—

    «“Can this person provide for a family?”»

    It can also be—

«“Will this relationship respect my independence, identity, and ambitions?”»

That shift is influencing what many people expect from a modern marriage.

    —

    👨‍💼

Are Men Viewing Marriage Differently Too?

    Absolutely.

The changing attitude toward marriage is not limited to women.

Many men also consider career stability, financial preparedness, emotional compatibility, and personal goals before deciding to marry.

They may want a partner with whom they can build not only a home, but also friendship, mutual respect, emotional support, and genuine partnership.

So, looking at the changing nature of marriage only through the experiences of women would give us an incomplete picture.

«“Men and women are both redefining what they expect from marriage in the modern world.”»

    —

    🌎

Is Marriage Fading Away in Western Countries?

Saying that marriage is simply “disappearing” would be an exaggeration.

For example, the median age at first marriage in the United States has risen substantially over the past several decades. But marrying later does not automatically mean rejecting marriage altogether.

A 2025 Pew Research Center survey found that among never-married U.S. adults under 50, a majority of non-LGBTQ adults said they would like to marry someday.

This points to an important distinction:

«“Delaying marriage and rejecting marriage are two different things.”»

Someone who chooses to marry later in life is not necessarily opposed to marriage.

Sometimes, they may simply be waiting for the right time, the right circumstances, or a compatible partner.

    —

    🇮🇳

    The Indian Context

India presents a somewhat different picture from many Western countries.

Here, marriage continues to be more than a relationship between two individuals. It often connects two families and remains an important part of social and cultural life.

    Yet India is changing too.

Particularly in urban areas, education, career opportunities, financial independence, and personal choice are influencing both the age at which people marry and the way they think about marriage.

At the same time, family continues to play an important role in many Indian lives.

So, the change in India does not always appear as a complete rejection of marriage.

Instead, it can increasingly be seen in the desire for greater personal choice in decisions such as—

    “When should I marry?”

    “Who should I marry?”

    And sometimes—

“Do I want to marry right now?”

These questions are becoming increasingly personal.

    —

    🌸

Conclusion: Is the World Really Drifting Away from Marriage?

Perhaps the most balanced answer is this:

    –

    💍

Some people are choosing not to marry.
    –

    ⏳

Some are choosing to marry later.
    –

    ❤️

Some want marriage but are waiting for a compatible partner.
    –

    🏡

And many people still consider marriage an important part of their lives.

So, it would be difficult to describe the entire world with a single statement.

    Society is changing.

And marriage is changing along with it—its role, its expectations, and the meaning people attach to it.

Perhaps the story of marriage is not a story of “extinction.”

Perhaps it is a story of “evolution.”

And maybe that is the most important idea to take away from this discussion—

«“People are not necessarily ending marriage. They are beginning to write their own definitions of it.”»

    —

    A Question for You

Do you think people today are moving away from marriage—or are they simply trying to understand and experience marriage on their own terms?

What do you think? Share your perspective in the comments below.

    —

  • Why Do Some People Want to Stay Away from Marriage?

“Not every unmarried person is running away from marriage. Sometimes, they simply want to avoid the wrong marriage.”

    Read Part 5

In the previous part, we understood that marriage is not an obligation for everyone. For some, it can be a beautiful partnership in life, while for others, it may simply not be a priority.

But here, another important question arises—

If marriage is considered so important, then why do some people want to stay away from it?

When someone says, “I don’t want to get married,” society often decides the reason for that person.

Some say, “Young people today don’t want responsibility.”

Some say, “They are too focused on their careers.”

    Some say, “They want freedom.”

And some assume that perhaps they are afraid of commitment.

But can everyone’s story really be the same?

    Of course not.

There can be many different personal, social, financial, and emotional reasons behind choosing not to marry or choosing to marry later.

    And most importantly—

“Being unmarried, by itself, is not proof that someone is running away from marriage.”

🤔 Do Some People Actually Want to Avoid Responsibility?

Yes, some people may not be ready for the responsibilities that come with marriage.

Marriage is not simply about two people being together. It also brings financial, emotional, and family responsibilities. Not everyone is ready to accept these responsibilities at the same stage of life.

But assuming that every unmarried person is irresponsible is also unfair.

Sometimes, a person is not trying to avoid responsibility.

They are trying to avoid the wrong responsibility.

They understand that a rushed marriage decision does not change only their own life; it can also affect the life of another person.

Therefore, sometimes taking a step back, thinking carefully, and asking yourself difficult questions can also be a form of responsibility.

💰 Financial Stability Is Also a Reality

Marriage may be an emotional relationship, but it also comes with financial realities.

Rent or a mortgage, everyday expenses, healthcare needs, future savings, and the cost of raising children can all affect a couple’s life.

That is why some people want to become financially stable before getting married.

It does not necessarily mean that they value money more than love.

    Sometimes, their thinking is simply—

“I want to be at least reasonably prepared to fulfill my responsibilities toward the person with whom I am going to build my life.”

    🎓 Prioritizing Career and Education

    Everyone’s life journey is different.

Some people need to complete higher education. Some want to establish themselves in their careers. Some want to start a business, while others may have different personal priorities in life.

As a result, marriage may be postponed for a few years.

That does not always mean they are against marriage.

    Sometimes, it simply means—

    “Not now.”

And “not now” does not always mean “never.”

🧠 The Influence of Relationships Around Us

A person’s views about marriage are not shaped only by their own experiences.

They also learn by observing the relationships around them.

If someone has grown up watching their parents constantly argue, seen a close relationship fall apart, or watched someone live for a long time in a stressful relationship, they may naturally become more cautious about marriage.

    They may quietly ask themselves—

“What if I make the same mistake?”

This fear does not affect everyone in the same way. But such experiences can influence how a person views relationships and marriage for a long time.

Therefore, reducing someone’s decision to stay away from marriage to simply fear or avoidance would be an oversimplification of their experience.

🕊️ Personal Freedom and Personal Space

Today, many people consider their time, career, friendships, interests, and personal decisions to be important parts of their lives.

Some worry that marriage may limit their freedom.

But in a healthy relationship, partnership and personal freedom do not have to be opposites.

Two people can live together while still remaining two different individuals.

Perhaps a mature understanding of marriage is this—

“Being together should not mean erasing each other’s identity.”

Partnership does not mean that a person should lose their identity. However, when marriage is seen only as a form of control, some people may try to stay away from it.

    🌿 Is Being Single Easy?

    No.

Choosing not to marry may have its potential advantages, but single life also has its own challenges.

Care during illness, emotional support, social connection, and planning for the future are important considerations for anyone.

Therefore, the decision not to marry deserves to be considered just as seriously as the decision to marry.

Being unmarried is not a problem, but understanding the responsibilities of the life you choose is important.

And the same applies to choosing marriage.

❤️ Should You Wait Until You Find the Right Person?

This is an equally important question.

The search for the “right person” can sometimes continue for so long that a person begins expecting impossible perfection from real human beings.

There is no perfect partner in real life.

Every person will have some strengths and some weaknesses.

So the question should not be—

    “Is this person absolutely perfect?”

    Instead, perhaps it should be—

    • “Can we respect each other despite our imperfections?”

    • “Can we communicate even when we disagree?”

    • “When difficult situations arise, can we stand together against the problem rather than against each other?”

This is where the journey from Perfection to Compatibility begins.

💬 What Should Couples Talk About Before Marriage?

Marriage should not be a decision based only on attraction.

Two people should openly discuss at least these important areas before getting married—

💼 Career, work, and future goals

    💰 Financial responsibilities and budgeting

👶 What both partners think about having children

👨‍👩‍👧 Relationships and boundaries with both families

🏠 Living arrangements and personal freedom

💗 Sharing household and marital responsibilities

🧘 How they will deal with difficult situations and disagreements

It is not necessary to have the same opinion about everything.

What matters is whether two people can respect each other’s perspectives even when they disagree.

“Sometimes, in marriage, the ability to handle disagreements with respect is more important than having the same opinions.”

⏳ And What If You Don’t Find the Right Partner?

Perhaps this is where one of the biggest differences between modern and traditional thinking can be seen.

    Traditional thinking often says—

“You are getting older. Now you have to get married, no matter what.”

But today, a person may also ask—

“If I am not finding the right compatibility, why should I rush?”

The wait may last a few months. It may last a few years. It may even last longer.

But getting married simply because “it is getting late” is not, by itself, a sufficient reason.

Age may matter. Circumstances may matter. But choosing a life partner should not be a decision made simply because of time pressure.

🌸 Conclusion: What Should the Real Question Be?

Perhaps instead of repeatedly asking an unmarried person—

    “Why aren’t you getting married?”

we should ask a different question—

“What do you want from your life?”

A person’s decision about marriage is not determined by age alone.

Their experiences, priorities, financial circumstances, family background, emotional readiness, and vision for the future can all play a role.

For some, marriage can be a beautiful partnership in life.

For others, the timing may simply not be right.

And for some, marriage may not be a priority at all.

Perhaps understanding these different life choices requires us to learn to listen before we judge.

“Sometimes, choosing not to enter a relationship is not an escape from responsibility. Sometimes, refusing to enter the wrong relationship is itself a great responsibility.”

    ⚠️ Disclaimer

Every person’s circumstances are different, so major life decisions should be made thoughtfully, considering one’s personal circumstances, communication, and judgment.

    💬 What Do You Think?

Is delaying marriage always about avoiding responsibility?

Or can finding the right partner, financial stability, career, and personal freedom also be important factors?

Personal Space

(What Do You Think?)

  • Should We Get Married or Not? A Modern Analytical Take

Should We Get Married or Not? A Modern Analytical Take

    Last Part:

In modern society, we are witnessing a massive generational shift. For decades, the path was pre-written: reach a certain age, secure a job, get married, and start a family.

But today, people are asking a deeper, more profound question— If marriage is no longer a necessity, why do it at all?

The answer is deeply individual and personal:

    A Shared Journey:
Some people desire a companion with whom they can share their entire life’s journey.

Desire for Family: Some individuals deeply wish to build a traditional family and raise children.

Emotional Partnership: Many value emotional and social companionship as a vital pillar of their existence.

Fulfillment in Solitude: Conversely, many realize they can live a perfectly complete and fulfilling life without marriage.

Societal rules cannot be tailored to a single template; therefore, the decision to marry remains an intensely personal choice.

    🤝

Shift the Focus: From “Seeking a Partner” to “Being a Partner”

People often enter the dating market stating— “I want a good husband” or *”I want a good wife.” But perhaps the question needs to be flipped: “Am I truly ready to be a good partner myself?”

We frequently carry a long checklist of expectations for our spouse:

    * They must understand me and respect my boundaries…

    * They must stand by me during difficult times…

    * They must support my family and my career dreams…

But are we genuinely prepared to offer the exact same level of support in return?

If we demand respect and freedom, are we ready to honor theirs? If we expect them to overlook our flaws, will we be understanding of their mistakes? This is where a conscious marriage actually begins. Marriage is not a machine driven by individual expectations; it is a matrix of shared responsibilities.

    🔍

The Loneliness Trap: Marriage is Not a Therapy Session

Marrying simply to escape loneliness is perhaps the weakest foundation for a lifelong relationship.

Marriage is not a shortcut cure for personal emptiness or emotional voids. If an individual is internally anxious, unfulfilled, or emotionally unstable, signing a legal marriage certificate will not magically resolve their internal struggles. In fact, marriage amplifies existing challenges by introducing fresh domestic, financial, and legal pressures.

Therefore, marriage should never be a tool to fill a void; it must be the union of two complete individuals who come together to strengthen one another, rather than becoming codependent.

    ⏳

Is Finding the Right Partner Truly That Crucial?

Yes, absolutely. The decision to marry is not just about present-day happiness. You are choosing the person with whom you will navigate your entire future. While things might seem effortless today, life inevitably changes:

    * Both partners might be healthy today, but sickness can strike tomorrow.

    * Careers may be thriving today, but financial crises can emerge tomorrow.

    * Circumstances may be favorable today, but hardships will arrive tomorrow.

Thus, when choosing a life partner, it is not enough to ask— “Do I like this person right now?” Instead, you must ask: “Can I go through life’s darkest storms with this person without our bond breaking apart?”

    📋

The Pre-Marriage Audit: 7 Crucial Conversations

Marriage should never be an impulse driven solely by initial attraction. Before making a lifelong commitment, couples must have transparent, open conversations about these 7 core pillars:

    💼

Career Trajectory & Future Goals: How do we balance dual-career growth and personal ambitions?

    💰

Financial Management & Responsibilities: How will we handle budgeting, debts, and financial autonomy?

    👶

Family Planning & Children: What are our honest, shared perspectives on having or not having children?

    👪

Family Dynamics & Boundaries: How will we manage relationships and set boundaries with both sets of in-laws?

    🏡

Living Arrangements & Personal Space: Where will we live, and how will we safeguard individual freedom?

    🧼

Domestic Responsibilities & Chores: How will we fairly divide daily household chores and routines?

    🧘‍♂️

Conflict Resolution & Decision-Making: How will we navigate disagreements and make major decisions during tough times?

Agreement on every single point is not mandatory. What truly matters is whether both individuals can respect each other’s perspectives despite having different viewpoints.

    🙋‍♂️

And What if You Don’t Find the Right Partner?

This is where we observe the most significant and positive cultural shift in modern society.

    * The Outdated Mindset: “You are reaching a certain age; you just have to settle down, no matter what.”

    * The Modern Mindset: “If I don’t find the right alignment, I will gracefully choose to wait.”*

This wait could last months, years, or even a lifetime. But marrying simply because “time is running out” is the worst possible justification. The anxiety of aging is temporary, but the psychological toll of being trapped with the wrong partner lasts a lifetime.

    🤔

But is Waiting Forever Always the Right Path?

No, a realistic balance is necessary here as well. Sometimes, people create highly idealized, fictional standards in search of a “Perfect Partner,” making it impossible for any real human being to measure up.

In the real world, no one is flawless; everyone carries imperfections. Therefore, a right life partner does not mean a perfect human being. The right partner is someone with whom you can build a better, harmonious life despite mutual imperfections. In short, we should not seek perfection; we must seek compatibility.

    🏛️

    The Ultimate Decision

Ultimately, the choice to get married rests entirely with the individual. However, before finalizing your decision, two questions demand absolute honesty:

    1. First: Do I genuinely want to share my life’s journey with this specific person?

    2. Second: Am I mentally and emotionally prepared to take on the responsibilities that this relationship demands?

If the answer to both questions is a resounding “Yes,” marriage can be a beautiful new beginning. But if the answer is “No,” pausing is the wisest decision you can make.

Read in English: ” Should We Married or Not? A Modern Analytical Take.

(Conclusion)

Read in English: Is Marriage Necessary ?

    Read Part-1

    Read Part-2

    Read Part-3

Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) की Youth in India 2022 रिपोर्ट में NFHS-3 और NFHS-5 के आंकड़ों की तुलना करते हुए बताया गया है कि 25–29 वर्ष की महिलाओं में पहली शादी की median age 2005–06 में 17.4 वर्ष से बढ़कर 2019–21 में 19.7 वर्ष हो गई।

  • Is Marriage Necessary?

    Read: Part-1

    Read: Part-2

    Read: Part -3

«“Marriage is not necessary for every person. But if you choose to marry, you should be prepared to make the relationship work.”»

This is perhaps one of the most personal questions in the entire discussion—

Does every person really need to get married?

For a long time, society’s answer was almost always an unquestioned, collective “yes.”

    A certain age would come…
    Marriage would happen…
    A family would be formed…
    Children would follow…

And this was considered the normal, almost only, path through life.

But can every person’s life really follow the same path?

    Perhaps not.

For one person, marriage may become the most beautiful partnership of their life. For another, living alone may be more suitable. And for someone else, marriage may feel right only after several more years.

As we discussed in Part 1 of this series: Marriage Is Not Disappearing, today’s generation may not necessarily be running away from marriage. Perhaps it is simply asking better questions before saying “yes.”

Therefore, placing marriage into only one category—“necessary” or “unnecessary”—may not be appropriate.

    When Can Marriage Feel Necessary?

Marriage may become important for a person when—

    * There is a genuine desire for a life partner: They truly want to spend their life with someone.
    * There is a desire for emotional connection: They want to build a deep bond and a relationship based on trust.
    * There is a desire to build a family: Two people are ready to create a shared future and take on the responsibilities that come with it.
    * There is a desire for companionship through life’s ups and downs: They want someone with whom they can share success, failure, difficult times, and ordinary days.

As we tried to understand in Part 3: What Is Marriage, After All?, marriage is not merely a celebration. It is the responsibility of living thousands of ordinary days with another human being.

For such a person, marriage is no longer simply a social tradition.

    It becomes their own choice.

And a decision made out of genuine personal choice is often accompanied by a greater sense of responsibility.

But Is Life Incomplete Without Marriage?

    No.

The idea that a person’s life can be complete only after marriage is a very limited way of looking at life.

A person’s identity is not determined only by their marital status.

Someone can be successful in their career.
They can take care of their family.
    They can contribute to society.
They can maintain strong relationships with friends and relatives.
They can dedicate their life to a meaningful purpose.

And they can remain unmarried while doing all of these things.

    Therefore—

    * Being unmarried is not, by itself, a failure.
    * Being married is not, by itself, a guarantee of success.

The quality of a person’s life cannot be determined simply by whether they are married or not.

Getting married later, choosing not to marry, or spending some time living alone is not automatically right or wrong. What matters is whether the decision is made according to the person’s own understanding, wishes, and circumstances.

    A Changing Age of Marriage

The age and timing of marriage in India have also been changing.

According to the Government of India’s Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI), Youth in India 2022 report, a comparison of NFHS-3 and NFHS-5 data shows that the median age at first marriage among women aged 25–29 increased from 17.4 years in 2005–06 to 19.7 years in 2019–21.

During the same period, the proportion of women aged 25–29 who had married for the first time by age 20 declined from 72.4% to 52.8%.

These figures do not mean that every person wants to delay marriage or that marriage has lost its importance.

But they do indicate that the timing of marriage and life decisions are becoming more diverse than before.

And perhaps this is why the question today is not only—

    “Will you get married?”

    but also—

“When, why, and under what circumstances?”

    Then Why Get Married?

Because for some people, sharing life with a partner is itself a deeply valuable experience.

    Having someone—

with whom you can share the small and big things in life…
with whom you can make plans for the future…
in front of whom you can acknowledge your vulnerabilities…
with whom you can stand together during difficult times…

can give marriage a deeper meaning.

But for this, the desire to get married alone is not enough.

The Ability to Stay Together Matters Too

This is something we often forget.

People spend months preparing for a wedding—

    clothes,
    venue,
    food,
    guests,
    photography…

But do we spend the same amount of time preparing for the relationship for which the celebration is being organized?

    Do we learn—

    * How to communicate when disagreements arise?
    * How to understand each other’s boundaries?
    * How to discuss financial responsibilities beforehand?
    * How to make expectations about children, careers, and family clear?
    * How to support each other during stress and difficult circumstances?
    * And most importantly, how to accept our own mistakes?

Perhaps this is what real preparation for marriage looks like.

Preparing for the wedding day may take a few months.
Preparing to sustain a marriage can take a lifetime.

    Is Love Alone Enough?

    Love is important.

But a long-term relationship requires more than love alone.

Along with love, there must be—

    * Respect — for each other’s personality, individuality, and opinions.
    * Trust — the foundation that protects a relationship from constant insecurity.
    * Communication — the ability to speak honestly and listen carefully.
    * Patience — the willingness to face imperfections and difficult days together.
    * Responsibility — and the courage to acknowledge one’s own mistakes.

Even two good people will not always agree with each other.

    There will be disagreements.
    There will be anger.
    There may even be disappointment.

But a healthy relationship is not one in which disagreements never happen.

The real question is whether both people try to solve the problem after the disagreement.

Because marriage is not only about sharing the good days.

Sometimes, it is also about getting through the difficult days together.

How Far Should Social Pressure Go?

Family members may offer advice based on their own experiences.

Parents may genuinely worry about their child’s future.

Relatives may have their own opinions.

But ultimately, marriage is to be lived every day by the person who enters that relationship.

Therefore, social advice can be useful…

but social pressure should not become the decision-maker in someone’s life.

If a person wants to marry, they should not step away from it simply because of fear.

And if a person does not want to marry, they should not be forced into it simply because of “What will people say?”

Because society may talk for some time.

But that person has to live the life.

Perhaps This Is the Right Question…

    We should stop asking—

    “When are you getting married?”

    And start asking—

“Do you feel ready for marriage?”

There is a huge difference between these two questions.

The first reflects a social expectation.

The second asks about a person’s inner readiness.

And perhaps the entire story of modern marriage is hidden in this change.

    Earlier, the question was—

    “When will you get married?”

Now, the question is slowly becoming—

“Who will you marry, why will you marry, and are you ready to make it work?”

This change does not weaken marriage.

Perhaps it makes marriage a relationship that is chosen more thoughtfully.

One Important Point: The Right Age and the Right Preparation

The decision to marry should not be based on age alone.

Child marriage in India has declined over the years. According to the MOSPI report, the proportion of women aged 20–24 who were married before the age of 18 declined from 47.4% in 2005–06 to 23.3% in 2019–21.

However, the issue has not disappeared completely, and the situation can vary significantly across states and social circumstances.

According to UNFPA India’s analysis of NFHS-5 (2019–21), the proportion of women aged 20–24 in Bihar who were married before the age of 18 was 40.8%.

Therefore, when discussing marriage, the question should not only be—

“Should people get married or not?”

    It should also be—

“What is the right age, the right situation, and the right level of preparation?”

    In the End

Whether marriage is necessary or not may never have one universal answer.

Because every person’s life is different.
    Every person’s wishes are different.
    Every person’s circumstances are different.

    But one thing is certain—

If marriage is your choice, embrace it with your whole heart and with responsibility.

And if marriage is not what you want, do not make such a life-changing decision simply because of social pressure—a decision you may have to live with for years.

    Because life is very long…

and marriage is an even bigger decision.

    Getting married is not compulsory.

But if you choose to marry, understand the responsibility of becoming a part of another person’s life.

Read in English: What is marriage After All ?

    Ego.

  • What Is Marriage, After All?

    Read 1st Part:

    Read 2nd Part:

Marriage is fundamentally a social relationship between two individuals and, in many countries and societies, it also has a legal dimension. But its deeper emotional meaning cannot be fully understood through laws or traditions alone.

When two people get married, they are not simply deciding to share a home or a lifestyle. They are deciding to share a significant part of their lives with each other—

    – In happiness…
    – In sadness…
    – In success…
    – In failure…
    – During illness…
    – During financial difficulties…
    – And through thousands of ordinary days that will never become part of a photograph or a celebration.

That is why it is not enough to think of marriage simply as a love story. Marriage is also a story of responsibility.

The timing of marriage in India is gradually changing as well. According to India’s Sample Registration System (SRS), the average age at effective marriage for women increased from 22.1 years in 2017 to 22.7 years in 2020. During the same period, the average age for women in urban areas increased from 23.1 to 23.9 years.

These numbers are easy to see simply as ages. But they may also reflect a broader social change. Today, many important life decisions are becoming increasingly personal—

    – Education…
    – Career…
    – Financial stability…
    – Personal goals…
    – And the choice of a life partner.

That is why, when thinking about marriage, it may not be enough to ask—”When should I get married?” Sometimes the more important question is—”Am I ready for marriage?”

Because the right time is not determined by age alone. Mental readiness, emotional understanding, and the ability to handle responsibilities matter too.

Probably not. Love can begin a relationship. But love alone may not be enough to keep that relationship healthy for years.

    A healthy relationship needs:

    – Trust.
    – Respect.
    – Honest communication.
    – Respect for each other’s boundaries and independence.
    – And most importantly—the willingness to stand beside each other during difficult times.

Because the true test of a relationship does not always come during the good days. Almost every relationship can look beautiful when life is going well. But the true discovery happens when—

    – Financial problems arise…
    – Illness comes…
    – A career setback happens…
    – Two people disagree…
    – Both are exhausted…

That is when you begin to discover whether the relationship was built mainly on attraction or on a genuine partnership.

Marriage does not mean that two people must lose their individual identities. In a healthy marriage, “we” matters, but “I” should not disappear.

Two people can become an important part of each other’s lives while still having their own thoughts, dreams, interests, and personal boundaries. Perhaps the real challenge is finding that balance—

Close enough to feel connected, yet independent enough for both people to remain themselves.

Because love does not mean possessing another person. One of the most beautiful forms of love is accepting someone for who they are.

There is rarely just one reason why a marriage ends.

    – Sometimes there is a lack of communication.
    – Sometimes trust is broken.
    – Sometimes financial stress affects the relationship.
    – Sometimes constant conflict develops over household responsibilities.
    – Sometimes two people’s values or visions for life become so different that living together becomes difficult.
    – And sometimes there are serious behaviors or circumstances within a relationship where separation may be the safest and most appropriate decision.

That is why saying—”The institution of marriage itself is bad”—after seeing a marriage fail is just as simplistic as saying—”Every marriage will succeed”—after seeing a successful one.

Reality is far more complicated. Every marriage has its own circumstances. Every person has their own story. And every relationship has its own journey.

There is one word that can be particularly important in a marital relationship—ego. But it would also be wrong to blame every disagreement on ego.

Still, constantly trying to prove—”I am right and you are wrong”—can gradually turn a relationship from a partnership into a competition.

Sometimes the more important question is—”How can we solve this problem together?” rather than—”Who won this argument?”

Because spouses are not supposed to be opponents. The problem may be on the other side of the table—not your partner. That shift in perspective can make a relationship stronger.

Perhaps the most beautiful part of marriage is not simply having someone beside you every day. It is finding someone in whose presence you do not constantly feel the need to prove yourself.

    – Someone with whom you can admit your weaknesses.
    – Someone with whom failure does not make you feel humiliated.
    – Someone with whom you can celebrate your success.
    – And someone with whom you can share your failures without fear.

Such a relationship gradually becomes more than a husband-and-wife relationship. It becomes friendship. It becomes partnership. It becomes trust. And sometimes—it becomes a home that does not require a building.

Two people can live under the same roof. But simply sharing a home does not automatically create a partnership. Partnership begins when both people try to understand each other’s lives.

When decisions are not limited to—”What is best for me?”—but sometimes also include—”What is better for both of us?”

But that does not mean giving up your own wishes in every decision. A healthy marriage involves compromise, but not the surrender of self-respect. It involves commitment, but not the destruction of identity. It involves togetherness, but not the end of independence.

That balance is what can transform marriage from simply a relationship into a healthy partnership.

Perhaps the simplest definition of marriage is this—

Marriage is a voluntary life partnership between two individuals in which they choose to become part of each other’s lives with love, respect, trust, and responsibility.

Not everyone wants to get married. And marriage is not necessary for every person. Marriage is not an examination of life that everyone must take and pass.

But for someone who chooses marriage, it is important to understand that they are not simply entering a ceremony. They are entering a relationship. A partnership where—

    – Rights come with responsibilities.
    – Love requires patience.
    – Freedom requires understanding.
    – Happiness will be accompanied by difficult days.
    – And sometimes, “we” must be given importance alongside “I.”

We often ask—”Should I get married?” But perhaps an even more important question is—”Am I truly ready to share my life with another human being?”

    – Am I ready to accept not only their good days, but also stand beside them during their difficult ones?
    – Do I only want love, or am I also willing to accept responsibility?
    – Do I want the other person to understand me, or will I also make the effort to understand them?
    – Do I want to win every argument, or am I sometimes willing to let the relationship win?

Because in marriage, there does not always have to be one winner and one loser. Sometimes both people win when the relationship survives. And sometimes both lose when they keep fighting each other instead of trying to understand each other.

Getting married can be a one-day decision. But living a marriage is a decision made every day.

    – Every morning…
    – Every conversation…
    – Every disagreement…
    – Every apology…
    – Every compromise…
    – Every small act of care…
    – And in countless ordinary moments that never receive a celebration.

Perhaps that is where the beauty of marriage truly lies. Sharing life with someone who makes not only the big dreams beautiful, but also the ordinary days.

Because ultimately—marriage is not simply about starting a life with someone. It is about continuing to choose that life together.

“Getting married is a decision. But a healthy marriage has to be lived every day.”

    What Do You Think?

Marriage means different things to different people.

    – Is being emotionally and mentally prepared more important than simply reaching a certain age?
    – Are people today looking at marriage more thoughtfully than previous generations?
